SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 now available

The SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 version has been released now.
The changes and improvements of SharePoint 2016 Beta 2 compared to the IT Preview released in August 2015 can be read here.

There are also some features which has been deprecated or removed in the SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2. I want to mention two things which are no longer available:

  1. SharePoint Foundation
The free, light version of SharePoint Server which comprises the core functionality is no longer available and shipped. An alternative for the SharePoint Foundation is Office365.
  2. Business Intelligence
BI functionality is no longer of the SQL Server 2014 is not included yet in SharePoint Server. SQL 2014 PowerPivot and PowerView Add-Ins cannot be deployed to SharePoint Server 2016 yet.
Excel Service functionalities are deprecated in SharePoint Server 2016. In order to use Excel Services functionality the Excel Online in Office Online Server Preview has been used for it. Office Online Server Preview is the successor of the Office Web Apps Server.

The ISO file of the beta 2 release can be downloaded in different langauges here.

Based on the speech of Jeff Teper at the European SharePoint Conference 2015 in Stockholm, approximately 99% of the final releases features are in the Beta 2 version already. Therefore it is quite ready. Nevertheless, this Beta 2 release cannot be upgraded to the RTM version later or should not be used in production.

    Hi Stefan,
sorry but you are wrong. BI will be available – but not currently as SQL 2014 components do not yet fit and SQL 2016 CTP 3.1 is not yet available – hence more to come:
SharePoint Server 2016 requires updated versions that will ship later this year. The SQL Server 2014 Power Pivot and Power View add-ins for SharePoint Server 2016 cannot be deployed or used in SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2. The following business intelligence features won’t be available until then:

      Hello Rainer
Yes, you’re right, thank you. I’m sorry for this misunderstanding. I’ll correct the article.
I had information of the SQL Conference in Redmond that the BI Stack will be swaped out from SharePoint or rather not mentioned anymore. There are some other tools available like Power BI Desktop.
That would had fit with the strategy of Microsoft in order to use Office365 and there services and functionality.
